A Way With Words & Numbers
|
While tutoring…
Tutors CAN be expected to:
- Participate in literacy- and math-enhancement activities.
- Work one-on-one with a child.
- Work with small groups of children.
- Work with large groups to allow the teacher to work individually with children who need expert attention -- the teacher must remain in the classroom.
- Work on increasing a child's interest in reading and math.
- Help increase child's sense of self-confidence and level of self-esteem.
Tutors CANNOT be expected to:
- Participate in non-reading or non-math activities, such as general clerical work, copying, preparing the classroom displays, running errands, etc.
- Match or replace the teacher's expert knowledge about reading and math development issues.
- Remediate reading or math disabilities.
- Be disciplinarians in the classroom.
We also ask teachers to agree to the following:
- Provide their email address to their site coordinator and tutors.
- Orient their tutors to their classroom and students.
- Be prepared for the time their tutors will be in their classroom, and provide them with some direction as to the work they will do that day.
- Inform their tutors of any classroom activities that will affect their scheduled visits such as field trips, guest speakers, etc
- Provide their tutors with any necessary information regarding the student(s) with whom they are working.
- Utilize their tutors for academic activities only (no clerical duties).
- Inform their site coordinator in a timely fashion of any unexcused absences or concerns regarding their tutors so that the problem may be resolved quickly.
Tutor Expectations:
As with any other job, there are some expectations set forth for you as an A Way With Words and Numbers tutor.
Failure to do any of the following can result in your termination from the program.
Fill out ALL necessary paperwork (see next page) and return promptly to the appropriate place.
- Work study tutors: Accurately record the hours you spent tutoring. You may NOT be paid for time spent traveling to the site, on the playground, or engaged in any other activity besides tutoring. Use an electronic timesheet to ensure accuracy and legibility.
- Communicate clearly and frequently with your site coordinator. This means checking e-mail and phone messages on a DAILY basis and responding in a timely manner.
- Attend all scheduled trainings, tutor meetings, and tutoring sessions. You are expected to arrive on time and to stay for the duration.
- Plan ahead! Contact your site coordinator if you know in advance that you will have to miss a tutoring session.
- Notify your teacher/site and then your site coordinator if you are either running late or are unable to attend a tutoring session.
- If you have agreed to provide transportation for other tutors, and will be late or unable to drive, communicate with them as soon as possible.
- Notify your site coordinator immediately of any changes in your schedule.
- Be a positive, active participant in all training sessions and meetings. This will work to your benefit by enhancing your learning experience and adding another dimension to your tutoring experience.
- Be a positive role model for the students with whom you are working. They are looking to you for guidance, so avoid the use of inappropriate language and maintain an air of caring professionalism.
- Avoid physical contact with students. Young children in particular like to hug, sit in your lap, lean on you while they read, etc. Ask the teacher for guidance in how to handle that.
- Share any problems/concerns with your site coordinator and/or your teacher as soon as they arise.
