A Way With Words & Numbers

Undergraduate Students

Who can participate?

Any MU student! Tutors work in teams at the various sites, supervised by a site coordinator. Site coordinators are either graduate students or undergraduates who have served as A Way With Words & Numbers tutors for at least two years.

When do you hire tutors?

We hire throughout the academic year, although the earlier in the semester you come see us, the more likely you are to be placed.

What will I do?

  • Work directly with students (or adults), one-on-one or in small groups either during school hours or in after school programs. Tutors have fixed schedules that are organized by their site coordinator.
  • Participate in reflective team meetings every other week where you are given a chance to interact with the other tutors at your site. These meetings will include on-going training covering the issues you may encounter on a daily basis while tutoring.
  • Email weekly reports to site coordinators covering any issues, concerns, or progress encountered while tutoring.
  • Participate in three one-hour initial training sessions covering math, reading, and behavior issues.
  • Check email regularly! Email is the primary source of communication between tutors and site coordinators. It is necessary to check it daily.

A Tutor Expectations sheet is available in the A Way With Words & Numbers office at the Student Success Center.

Volunteers are required to tutor three hours a week. Work-study students will earn as much as their work-study award allows, typically about six hours a week.

What are the benefits of the program?

  • Allows work-study students to earn money while in college.
  • Allows students to be invaluable members of the community.
  • Delivers direct service to members of the community.
    • You help students master the important skills of reading and math.
    • You are given the opportunity to serve as a positive, supportive mentor and develop relationships with the students.
  • Promotes a spirit of helping and service to everyone involved.
  • Challenges students to participate in solving serious social issues.

Professional and Educational Gains:

  • Schools and agencies receive hardworking, prospective employees and volunteers.
  • Students gain valuable experience by working in a professional setting.
    • Including practical job skills such as responsibility, communication, punctuality, professional dress and behavior, and working with both children and authority figures.
  • Students gain job skills in new areas and experience for resumes.
  • Students gain beneficial career exploration.
    • By reflecting on your experiences, you will learn a great deal about yourself and how you might fit into the world of work. Some tutors have even decided to change their major as a result of their experience.

What do current tutors have to say about the program?

"I love this program. I think it really helps the kids and the teachers, but it helps me too- it's nice to see outside campus once in a while!"
"Working with A Way With Words & Numbers has been an awesome experience for me and I look forward to many more with them in the future."
"It is an excellent way to gain experience and observe new teaching strategies."

How do I apply?

If you are interested in this program, please stop by the A Way With Words & Numbers office in the Student Success Center.

Each applicant will be interviewed by the A Way With Words & Numbers staff. Applicants must provide at least two references. If you are hired, you will need to undergo a Criminal Record and Child Abuse Check processed by the Columbia Public Schools.

When will I get started?

We want to get you started as quickly as possible! But be patient. At the start of each semester we have to first find out what hours each site is requesting, then see where you will fit based on your availability, and then be sure you are trained before you begin. For the fall semester, the typically means you will begin tutoring sometime in mid-September.

If you have any questions, Email: A Way With Words & Numbers or call us at (573) 882-5535.
