The International Students Career Services was first conceptualized in 2001 by five pioneering women. They noticed that there was a rapidly growing number of international students and students who wish to work in a global setting at the university. Consequently, this population had expressed a greater need for a career service that targets the unique needs of this population. After years of struggle and hard work, this program celebrated its grand opening in Winter semester 2005. These services have been developed and operated through a joint project of the Center for Multicultural Research, Training, and Consultation & the Career Center, and the Student Success Center, and with cooperation from the International Center, Asian Affairs office and Crosby MBA Program.
ISCS strived between 2005 to 2007 as the office expanded the services and developed innovated programs such as the alumni panel and international business dining etiquette. However, the 2007 academic year posed another challenge for ISCS as funding from the Provost office disappeared and ISCS lost its full time coordinator position. Hung Chiao, a veteran of ISCS, took over the office and lead a group of new staff into a new terrain of challenges. First, without a full-time staff, the passage of knowledge was broken and the new staff struggled as they transition into their new jobs. Second, the future of ISCS was up in the air with Hung Chiao and Dr. Puncky Heppner going back to the drawing board to strategize plans to maintain ISCS. Last, ISCS continues to work with Dr Joe Johnson and Craig Benson on interfacing ISCS into the MU Career Center’s daily operation. The support from the MU Career Center was instrumental in shaping the future of ISCS.
In Spring 2008, the ISCS staff organized different teams and talked to various offices and departments on campus to save ISCS. As a result of strategic marketing and successful collaborative efforts, ISCS was able to secure funding support from the MU Career Center, the International Center, the Asian Affair Center, and the Crosby MBA program. In exchange, ISCS developed and provided programs specifically to aid the missions of each office.
Today, ISCS offers a myriad of services address the multifaceted needs of the international students and those who want to study abroad. ISCS continues to strive for excellent by committing to the training of culturally competent staff, publishing psychoeducational documents, and internationally friendly services.
