Workshops

Here are a few examples of workshops sponsored by ISCS. All workshops are located in the MU Career Center, lower level of the Student Success Center. For more info on dates & topics, please email career@missouri.edu

Finding an On-Campus Job

This workshops explains the process, places, and resources at  MU to find an on-campus part-time job. Here some of the types of jobs are clarified and distinguished from one another (i.e. Part-time Jobs v. Graduate assistantships). Some of the major resources on-campus is introduced to students which are a great help in finding the right job

How to Write a U.S resume, and Cover letter

This workshop primarily focuses on introducing the style and format of the American resume and its corresponding documents. We have many handouts that are given to the participants. There is time set aside for students to have their resumes reviewed and to receive feedback from our Career Consultants without having to make an appointment. This aspect is what attracts most of the participants.

Prepare for the American Career Fair

This workshop will discuss how to successful participate in a U.S. Job Fair.  The topics covered will be the basic structure of a U.S. Job Fair, how to prepare for this event, resources in identifying employers who are interested in hiring international students, and approaching employers at the fair as an international.

Interviewing Skills 101

This workshop is part one of a two part series. This workshop will include such topics as: the process of the interview, how to prepare, and other information important for internationals to know. Students will be able to get an understanding of the American philosophy of Job hunting and the essentials in being successful, the three important steps in interviewing (i.e. preparation, the interview, and the follow-up).

Advanced American-Style Interviewing Skills

This workshop is part two of a two part series. This interview workshop will cover how to answer interview questions, common questions for international applicants, and examples of good practices in interviewing successfully. It focuses primarily on how to answer and ask questions appropriately during an interview, how to identify what types of questions are being asked (i.e. open-ended, short answer, behavioral), along with when it is appropriate to bring up visa issues.

Legal Seminar on Work Visa (H1B) & immigration (October, 6th)

This workshop assists International Students in understanding how to receive work permit visas (H1-B). This workshop primarily attracts those who want to stay and work within the United States after graduation. The structure of this workshop is somewhat different than the others in the sense that there is a clinic offered to students. Students sign up beforehand for 15 minute consultations, where they are able to ask questions and voice and personal concerns they are having in regards to their work permits

Curriculum Vitae Workshop (November, 1st)

This workshop primarily focuses on introducing the style and format of the curriculum vitae and its corresponding documents. We have many handouts that are given to the participants, as listed below. There is time set aside for students to have their CVs reviewed and to receive feedback from our Career Consultants without having to make an appointment.
