Cost of Living: Prices are slightly higher overall when compared with other Eastern European countries, but the cost of living is still lower than that of much of Western Europe. Prices vary widely by region. For example, Zagreb and Dubrovnik are relatively expensive compared to prices in northern Dalmatia and the outlying islands. Cultural Differences in the Workplace: It is polite to shake hands when arriving and leaving; also in Croatia is more polite to shake a woman’s hand before a man’s hand. Job Searching: Unemployment rates in Croatia are high, so opportunities for foreign workers are very limited. Work Teaching English in private language schools can be found in towns including Zagreb, Varazdin and Karlovac. Volunteers can work on environmental, renovation or social projects in Croatia.
