Language: Hungarian (Magyar), some Russian, German (especially among older citizens), English (especially among younger citizens) Cost of Living: The cost of living in Hungary is relatively low, with groceries costing about the same or less than in other parts of Europe if bought in supermarkets, and cheaper products available at local markets and some small shops. Electronics are more expensive than in the United States. Visas and Work Permits: You must obtain an employment visa from the Hungarian Embassy or consulate in their home country in order to enter Hungary. Working for a foreign-owned company, at an embassy , or as an English teacher are very promising areas. Keep this in mind when reading business cards, letters, etc. Clinking glasses (as in a toast) is insulting in Hungary. Money, Banking, & Insurance:Hungary’s largest banks are OTP and Postabank, but expatriates tend to use the foreign-owned retail banks such as Altalanos Ertekforgalmi Bank Rt (AEB), Magyar Kulkereskedelmi Bank Rt (MKB), or CitiBank Rt. To open an account you will be required to show your passport or other form of identity. Foreign nationals living and working in Hungary are required to register as a taxpayer there.
