Career Center Website - Work Abroad
Belize
Languages: English is the official language but Spanish is common as well. Cost of Living and Relocation Expenses: Belize is considered to be one of the most expensive countries in Central America. However, it is still generally less expensive than the U.S. Visa and Work Permits: A visa is required for any stay of longer than 30 days. Any foreign citizen who wishes to work in Belize must have resided in Belize for at least six months (be a permanent resident). The employer would be responsible for securing the permit. For more information please visit: http://belize.usembassy.gov/passports.html and http://www.ambergriscaye.com/economics/entryreq.html. Job Searching: Belize is also considered a Caribbean nation, so you may find luck with hospitality or region-specific job searches. The following website is an employment agency in Belize: http://www.belizejobs-acts.bz/ that allows you to search for jobs and post resumes. Cultural Differences in Workplace: Family connections and relationships are very important in Belize. Time is not as important a concept as it is in the U.S. Belizeans may say “maybe”, when “no” would be more accurate in order to avoid disappointing someone. Intense physical labor may be seen as demeaning as a result of a colonial history of slavery. Thus, a Belizean may not be extremely amenable to putting in long hours for a boss (the phrase “work hard” has a different meaning in Belize). Money and Banking: The national currency of Belize is the Belize dollar– when you hear prices quoted, be sure to know if it is in U.S. or Belize currency. When using your credit cards in Belize, many places will add a 5 percent service charge to your bill. Security/Safety: Go to http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1055.html and refer to safety and security.
