Columbia

Language:

Spanish is the official language. Native languages are also common.

Cost of Living:

As an American, you will find most goods and services in Colombia to be less expensive than in the U.S.  For more information visit:  http://www.worldstudent.com/uk/studyabroad/colombia/1c.shtml

Visa and Work Permits:

A visa is not required to enter Colombia, but is required if you plan on working. Information for obtaining a work visa can be found at: http://www.colombiaemb.org/opencms/opencms/consulates/work.html.

Job Searching:

Poverty and unemployment are increasing in Colombia, making it much more difficult for employers to be willing to hire a foreigner. However, English teachers are in high demand; search the web for language schools. The “Poor But Happy” Colombia website has informational discussion boards with topics about finding a job and obtaining visas: http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/.

Most Colombians search for general job openings by looking in the newspaper and sending their resume to companies.   Some internet links that may be useful include: www.Elempleo.com  and  www.terra.com.co .

The “World Travel” website offers some good information about obtaining an internship in Colombia: http://www.worldstudent.com/uk/studyabroad/colombia/4d.shtml

Cultural Differences in Workplace:

Colombia has a history of economic instability and unemployment. This has created a huge gap between upper and lower social classes, and almost no middle class. Colombians are known for being enthusiastic and lively communicators. Traditional Latin American customs hold true in Colombia as well, such as the concept of machismo. For more information visit: http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/resources/global-etiquette/columbia.html

Money and Banking:

You may find banking in Colombia to be a difficult process. It may be easier to maintain your U.S. account and simply withdraw money from Colombian ATMs.

Security / Safety:

Colombia is often considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world. It has historically had a problem with illegal drug trafficking, which has resulted in armed conflicts, kidnapping, and deaths.  Most conflicts take place in the countryside.   For complete safety and security information visit:
