Jumpstart

Jumpstart Tutor Position

Description

Jumpstart, a preschool enrichment and literacy program, trains and supports college students to serve as part-time tutors. Jumpstart tutors work one-to-one with young children to build skills crucial to school success. This past year, Jumpstart engaged more than 2,100 tutors in 57 communities across the United States.

About the Position

As a Jumpstart tutor, you will inspire young children to learn, serve your local community, and work on a team of your peers. Additionally, all tutors receive professional-caliber training to help them implement Jumpstart’s outcome-based program, promote children’s school success, and build family involvement.

Tutors gain hands-on professional development experience, have the potential to earn a Work-Study award, and receive an AmeriCorps education award of $1,000 upon successful completion of the full 300 hour service term. Jumpstart alumni are eligible for a two-year teaching fellowship.

Requirements:

  • The Jumpstart Tutor position is a year-long relationship (both fall and winter semesters), tutoring a 3-5 year old preschool child. We work primarily with low-income children and families.
  • We prefer that you have some type of experience working with children, however, this is not required. If you enjoy being with children and have a desire to work with them, we encourage you to apply.
  • You must be eligible to receive a work study award to qualify for the position. If you are currently on a waiting list to receive an award, we encourage you to go ahead and apply. If you have not filled out the FAFSA form (application to receive a work-study award), please contact your financial aid advisor ASAP to do so.
  • Again, this is a year-long position (both fall and winter semester). You must be confident that you can work both semesters. Jumpstart Tutors work approximately ten hours each week.  The required hours for the position include:
    • Two, two-hour afternoon shifts. Afternoons are assigned based upon your school schedule and must remain the same afternoons for both fall and winter semesters.
    • Two, one-hour team planning meetings each week.
    • For 300 hour positions: Four additional hours of classroom assistance time each week, scheduled around your classes each semester.
  • If you have transportation, that is preferred. However, if you do not, we still encourage you to apply.
