Major: Middle School Education

Description of Major:

Secondary teachers help students delve more deeply into subjects introduced in elementary school and expose them to more information about the world and themselves. They specialize in a specific subject, such as English, Spanish, mathematics, history, or biology. Secondary teachers teach a variety of related courses, such as American history, contemporary American problems, and world geography. Secondary school teachers engage in a variety of teaching strategies, such as cooperative small group learning, modeling, projects, integrated disciplines, and interactive teaching. They lecture and demonstrate to students. Secondary school teachers design their classroom presentations to meet student needs and abilities. They also work with students individually. Teachers assign lessons, give tests, listen to oral presentations, and maintain classroom discipline. They observe a student's performance and potential. Secondary teachers provide additional assistance in areas where needed. They arrange tutoring for some students or advanced assignments for others.
