What Can I do With a Major Major: Music Description of Major: In this program, you will learn how to understand and appreciate music. The music major has the option to concentrate in four different areas: music history, music theory, performance, and music management. The music history student focuses on the historical evolution of music as a social and intellectual aspect of culture, the development of musical instruments, and the study of specific cultural traditions and styles. The music theory student concentrates on the principles of sound manipulation as applied to the creation of music. This instruction focuses on theory, melody, counterpoint, harmony, modulation, instrumentation, orchestration, and studies of specific musical styles. The performance major prepares individuals to master musical instruments, including the voice, and to perform as solo or members of a musical organization. The music management student learns how to organize and manage music organizations, facilities, finances, and personnel.
