What Can I do With a Major Major: Special Education Description of Major: In this program, you will learn to work with children and adults with special needs related to physical, psychological, or cognitive disabilities or with persons with exceptional ability in these areas. This field includes a great deal of diversity in the population, disabilities, and settings in which the population is served. You will learn about normal human development and how psychological and sociological issues affect human behavior. You will learn how to help those with emotional disturbances, orthopedic, vision or speech impairments, and those who are developmentally delayed. You will learn about the causes of various disabilities and the methods appropriate for intervention and education of persons with disabilities within different settings. Important issues include: language, motor, and social-emotional development of persons with disabilities, diagnostic and assessment procedures, and effective communications with family members. You will also learn how to evaluate, communicate, and educate persons who exhibit exceptional intellectual, psychological, or artistic ability.
