Employer Work Study Manual

Hiring Guidelines

Students may not be hired by departments using the Federal Work Study (FWS) funding code unless they have a referral form that has been secured by eligible students using the online work study system. Students are instructed to report directly to the Work Study Contact (listed on the referral form) and present the referral form. The Work Study Contact will then direct the student to the position supervisor (also listed on the referral form) who will determine if there is a good match between the student and the position. When the student meets with the supervisor for the referred job, the student should be interviewed or given an office orientation for the job listed on the form (no substitutions). This orientation should include specific duties of the job, hours, pay rate, how evaluations are conducted, and when pay raises occur. If the job is a good match for both parties, the student should be instructed to report back to the Work Study Contact person to complete pertinent personnel and payroll documents in order to obtain wages. If, however, the student and/or supervisor agree that this is not a good match between student and employer, the student should be instructed to report back to the Work Study Contact to be released from the positon in order to go back online and choose another position. It is especially important to take the time to ensure the job fits because job transfers are discouraged.
