5 Simple Ways to De-stress!

The semester is coming to a close and the pressure of academic deadlines and final exams can be overwhelming. The Career Center wants you to be successful and we suggest five simple coping strategies that can help you effectively deal with the stress of papers, projects and tests.

1. Laugh

Read an Onion article, watch a Netflix comedy special, or just hang with your goofy friends.  Laughter increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies and triggers the release of endorphins which promote an overall sense of well-being. Laughter *is* the best medicine!

 2. Sleep

Sleep more. You’ll be more productive, less sensitive to negative emotions and less susceptible to stress. If that’s too much to ask, take a 20 minute power nap. But don’t sleep any longer! After 20 minutes deeper stages of sleep begin which can lead to grogginess and a zombie-like state.

3. Walk/Exercise

A simple 10-minute walk can help you relax. Exercise boosts those awesome endorphins me mentioned earlier and that reduces stress hormones. You can also do a little cardio to get yourself pumped up. Try the free 7 minute workout app.

4. Meditate

The Student Health Center has numerous audio and video mindfulness exercises to help you cope with stress and find greater life balance. Allow yourself time to pause and practice the following guided sitting and movement meditations.

5. Relaxation Station

Need a massage? Enjoy 15 minutes of relaxation in the Wellness Resource Center’s massage chair!  Stop by G202 in the MU Student Center (lower level) anytime between 8:30 am and 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. First come, first served.

 

You may feel like you don’t have time to laugh, sleep or exercise but the fact is a little self-care goes a long way!  So trade in your double-shot Macchiato for a massage or late-night cram session for a 20 minute laugh-fest. You’ll be amazed at how a little step can make a big change in your outlook and overall well-being.
