Why You Should Be a Career Specialist!

Hi. My name is Brooke Bassett and I have been working at the MU Career Center for close to a year now and I absolutely love it. I found out about this job through my small group leader when I was in high school. She had always mentioned how much she enjoyed her job and urged me to apply when I got to college. I applied my Sophomore year for the Career Specialist in Training position and could not have been happier.

First of all, the Career Center environment is so welcoming. Our new hire “orientation” ended up being a pizza party at Shakespeare’s. It was awesome. All our new coworkers welcomed  us and took the time to have intentional conversations with us. Our bosses, Craig and Carrie, are very kind, but also challenge us to be our best. They take feedback very well and somehow make learning about resumes, cover letters, major exploration and interviewing fun and exciting.

Secondly, not only did I learn how to help others (which is so rewarding), I learned how to help myself. Believe it or not, I didn’t have a resume when I got hired for the job and had no idea what LinkedIn was. By the end of training, I had perfected my resume, created networking accounts and felt more confident about my career path. It is such a good feeling, knowing that I am prepared for present and post college life.

Lastly, the Career Center staff is so diverse, and I have loved learning from all sorts of different people. At the Career Center we invite everyone in no matter their gender, race, ethnicity or background. During training we had a lot of discussion about Mizzou’s culture, inclusion and inequality. Although, hard at times I grew so much and feel better equipped to talk about these things in the future.

If you can’t tell, the MU Career Center is a GREAT place to work and we are hiring! If you are interested, please attend one of our informational sessions (listed below). If you have any questions or would like more information, visit the MU Career Center website or email career@missouri.edu.
