We all know Twitter is a great way to connect with friends and catch up on the latest updates, but what many don’t know is that Twitter is an excellent way to get ahead in the professional world. Here are a couple tips on how to establish yourself:

Have two accounts: Personal and Professional – Create an account that is aimed towards professionals and have a personal account that you can use to follow friends. Use your full name as the handle for you professional twitter, so it will be super easy for employers to access your account and see how great you are! Use a nickname or a variation of your full name for your personal twitter that you can set as private.

Follow accounts related to your interests – Choose accounts that are related to your area of expertise and follow people who inspire you. That way you will have plenty of current events knowledge that will come in handy while interviewing.

Be Choosy – Although you can link your accounts together, Twitter only allows you to have one open at a time. And who are we kidding, it’s probably going to be your personal account. So why not turn on mobile notifications? Pick your top three favorite accounts and vow to never miss a tweet. You will get all the updates and choose which ones you want to engage with.

Show off your personality – Use the 3-1 rule. For every three “professional” tweets, tweet something about yourself! This is not a rule that’s set in stone because everyone is different and some days are more interesting than others so it’s okay to have more professional tweets than fun ones. The key is to show both sides of yourself.

The key to successfully establishing an online image is to be yourself! Your professional twitter should be all about your interests and what inspires you.

Happy Tweeting!
