3 Things To Know About Finding a Part-Time Job

Working a part-time job during school can be a really rewarding experience both financially, socially, and professionally. Here are some helpful resources to help you land a great part-time job during your time at Mizzou!

Find Leads

Handshake is the employment site for all MU students and alumni. Last year, over 1,000 part-time positons were posted for local and remote work opportunities. Handshake is a good place to source jobs and also register for upcoming career fairs  To get started, login and complete your profile. You will also be prompted to post a current resume. A Career Center staff member will review your resume and send back any suggestions they may have. You may visit the Career Center in person for resume help as well.

Meet Employers

Take advantage of the Hire a Tiger: Campus Part-Time Job Fair that will take place September 4th from 12-3 pm on Lowry Mall.  About 25 employers from campus will be there to discuss their available positions. Attire is casual and we recommend that you bring copies of your resume and class schedule.

Make Connections

Speaking directly with people is the best way to learn about employment opportunities and make meaningful connections.

  • Career Coaching– speak with a Career Specialist about part-time jobs and applications. They are available anytime Monday-Friday between 9am and 4pm.
  • Large campus employers – most departments post on Handshake, but you can also visit departments (in person or online) that hire many students to learn more about vacancies (like Mizzou Store, MizzouRec, or Campus Dining Services).

If you are open to off-campus jobs, consider these options:

  • The District– also known as downtown Columbia, the District is within walking distance of the Mizzou campus and is full of retail stores, restaurants, and other venues.
  •  Shopping Mall– opportunities may be available in the Columbia Mall and other retail outlets in the area.

If you are ready to search for a job, look at our Guide to Part-Time Jobs and have a resume ready to share with potential employers!
