Are You Ready, New Tigers?

I distinctly recall how excited and nervous I was to pack all my belongings, move to a new city, and make a college campus my new home. There were so many questions I had about what awaited me, how I would meet new people, and what daily life would look like. The best advice we can give students is to take full advantage of everything Mizzou has to offer!

Whether you are a big MU sports fan, are passionate about the environment, like to be physically active, are laser focused on academics, there are countless ways you can get invested in the life of campus. All those interactions and activities are a way to meet people, build community and enrich your college experience.

Our student staff collaborated on this list of “staff picks” for things we’d recommend to new students:

  • Go to Welcome Week events
The whole campus is buzzing with excitement for your arrival! Attend as many activities as you can to meet the friendly staff, students and faculty who are here to support you! You’ll meet other new students and learn about cool opportunities and support services to help you throughout your time at Mizzou.
  • Introduce yourself to others
You don’t have to be an extrovert to meet others. Talk with people in your residence hall, at campus events, and in your classes. A simple smile and “Hey!” can lead to conversations and connections.
  • Don’t stay in your res hall room
Mizzou is an amazing and beautiful campus – so get out in it! You might feel a bit nervous, but it’s important to challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone.
  • Get familiar with campus
You’ll want to know where your classes will be held, but explore campus before other students return so you can find cozy study spots, great places to grab a bite, and places to stay active. Open houses and tours are a great way to learn all about the MU facilities, whether that’s running on Stankowski field, floating in the Tiger Grotto, grabbing coffee at the Memorial Union Starbucks, or study rooms in the libraries.
  • Take a swim or workout at MizzouRec
Our state-of-the-art facility has so many options to stay fit and active, which is important to your physical and mental health. Your student fees support these services so take full advantage of them! In addition, weights and fitness equipment there are group classes, courts, and a climbing tower! Plus, you can get involved with intramurals and club sports.
  • Attend your divisional orientation
Each School and College hosts an orientation during Welcome Week and it’s a great way to connect with faculty and staff in those units. They often have food, giveaways, and helpful information to share. Many academic departments host open houses and events which are great ways to meet people in your major!
  • Sign up on Handshake
Handshake is the employment site for Mizzou students so if you are seeking a campus job or part-time position off-campus, you’ll want to login to complete your profile and upload your resume. You can also visit the Career Center for help finding and applying for jobs.

We are so excited to welcome new Tigers in just over one week! While the start of college can seem overwhelming, please know that the entire Mizzou community is here to offer our full support – we are rooting you on!
