It’s Career Fair Week at Mizzou! This is an exciting opportunity to connect with representatives from over 375 employers, explore career paths, and potentially land internships or full-time positions. Whether you’re a first-time attendee or a seasoned job seeker, preparation is key. Here’s Mizzou’s Career Center guide to help you make the most of the experience:
1. Resume
Bring at least 10 copies of your most updated resume to hand out to recruiters. Ensure it is tailored to the types of positions you’re seeking. If you haven’t already, schedule an appointment with the MU Career Center to get personalized feedback and professional editing tips. A polished resume makes a strong first impression, so make it count.
2. Professional Attire
Dress to impress. Business casual is the minimum standard, but business professional is even better if you have access to it. If you don’t have the appropriate attire, Truman’s Closet offers free business clothing rentals for students. Just bring your student ID.
3. Company Research
Do your homework. Take time to research the companies that will be attending. Visit their websites, review their mission statements, and browse recent news or projects. Looking up employee profiles on LinkedIn can also give you insight into company culture, values, and typical career paths. Being informed will help you ask meaningful questions and demonstrate genuine interest.
4. Padfolio & Notepad
Bring a padfolio or notebook to stay organized. Jot down names, follow-up notes, and details about your conversations. These notes will be extremely helpful when writing thank-you emails or connecting on LinkedIn after the event.
5. Bring Your Best Self
Confidence, preparation, and a positive attitude can go a long way. Practice your elevator pitch in advance so you can quickly introduce yourself and explain what you’re looking for. This is your chance to shine, so be professional, enthusiastic, and authentic. Don’t forget to smile!
A career fair is more than just handing out resumes. It’s an opportunity to build your network, explore industries, and practice professional communication. With the right preparation and mindset, you can turn this week into a valuable stepping stone toward your future career. Good luck, Tigers! And remember, the Career Center is here to support you every step of the way.
