Don’t be Scared to Choose a Major!

With fall semester in full swing, students are starting to look ahead to the spring semester. Registration for spring classes starts October 29, and the thought of choosing new classes for exploring students can seem daunting. If the scariest thing about this Halloween season is choosing a major, consider a stop at the Mizzou Career Center.

Career Center Resources

There are many options for major exploration at the Career Center. For students looking for a bit of guidance around making their major decision, a meeting with a career specialist might help. A career and major exploration, offered as appointments or walk-ins, is meant to connect exploring students with resources that will help them in their major decision process. Commonly, Focus 2 will be recommended to exploring students. Focus 2, a free online test that helps narrow down students’ job interests and values, gives students access to job and major information that are matched to them.

Along with Focus 2, the Career Center offers an in-person activity with challenge cards, a set of cards including different job functions and ideas. A challenge card activity is meant to help students narrow down what an ideal job would look like for them.

Career Counseling

If a student’s major decision requires more on-going, individualized support, consider scheduling an appointment with a career counselor. Hosted at the Career Center, career counseling offers students a chance to dive into the major discussion one-on-one with a career counselor. To schedule an appointment, current Mizzou students can use MU Connect. The service is also available to recent alumni residing in the state of Missouri, and they can schedule an appointment through emails. For any questions, email careercounseling@missouri.edu
