Freshmen FAQs

Summer Welcome is officially underway at Mizzou! As we welcome new students to campus, they’ll get a glimpse of what their life at Mizzou will look like. From exploring downtown to scheduling classes for the fall semester, students can leave feeling like their Mizzou journey is already underway.

To help kickoff the fall semester on the right foot, here’s some common questions from new students that the Career Center can help with.

How do I get a part-time job?

Our career specialists can help walk through the most common hiring platforms used by Mizzou and how to set up your profile to filter for jobs. If an on-campus job is on your agenda for the fall semester, consider scheduling a time for a career specialist to look over your resume, help you prep for an interview, or help you start a LinkedIn.

What’s Work-Study?

Work-Study is a part of students’ financial aid packages, and students can find out if they qualify by checking the financial aid tab in MyZou. If a student does qualify, a career specialist can help walk them through the Work-Study platform and explain the specifics about the program.

What should I major in?

If you’re unsure of what you want your major or career path to be, come in for a career and major exploration with one of our career specialists! Outside of the career and major exploration, Focus 2 or CliftonStrengths are great tools for students to get a better idea of what skills come naturally to them and what they value in a job. If you take either assessment, make sure to come in so a career specialist can help you understand your results and show you how to best navigate the platforms.

What needs to be on a resume?

Whether you have a resume or not, the Career Center is here to help you. If you have a current resume, a career specialist can give you tips on how to improve it. If you’re trying to find out where to start, we can walk you through the basics of a resume and give you pointers on best practices for getting hired. There’s also plenty of resume examples based on school year or major on the Career Center website.
