Gearing up for Fall Semester!

Less than 50 days until classes start! With a new semester approaching, it’s a great time to think about your Mizzou experience and what you’re hoping to get out of it. Here’s four steps to help any student, from freshman to senior, make the most of the new semester.

Set Goals

Whether you’re starting your freshman or senior year, setting goals can help build both your personal and academic journey at Mizzou. If you’re new to campus, consider setting a goal of visiting a new Mizzou resource each week. I’m partial to the Career Center, Writing Center, and Tiger Tutors. If you feel like you already have a handle on resources on campus, set a goal to get to know a classmate in each class, or make a personal connection with a professor. You never know when you might need a reference letter!

Build Skills

Mizzou’s campus is a great place to explore new skills. If you’re looking to expand career or major-specific skills, be on the lookout for on campus events or resources around campus you could utilize. At the Career Center, career specialists can help you work on your interview skills. For more major-specific skills, see if there’s any hands-on options through your department to learn more about the field you’re studying.

Make Connections

From classes to new friends, it’s easy to make connections on a college campus. Try to connect with classmates and professors within your major, or join a club or Greek Life organization to meet more people across campus. If in-person connections aren’t your thing, make a LinkedIn profile and connect with current students, as well as Mizzou alumni. LinkedIn can be a great way to see how past Mizzou students are using their degree in the real world and helps set up current students for job or internship hunting.

Get Experience

Clubs or part-time jobs are great places to start getting experience on campus. For those further along at Mizzou, looking at internships is a great option for getting experience in your field. Thanks to remote work, there’s often options for fall and spring internships along with the traditional summer internship. If you’re considering an internship for the upcoming summer, make sure you’re up to date on common times internships are posted for your major. Depending on the field, applications can be posted as early as October.
