Midterm Survival Kit

We’re officially wrapping up Week 7 and charging headlong into midterms! To help you crush your exams, papers, and projects, we’ve compiled this essential “survival kit” of tips to keep you positive, focused, and performing at your best.

Fuel your body and mind

You need high-octane fuel to perform under pressure. Don’t skip nutritious meals for sugary snacks or comfort foods—you’ll only crash later. Be mindful of caffeine; too much can lead to anxiety, insomnia, and a racing heart.

Hydration is key: Start your day with a glass of water, and always bring your water bottle to campus. Staying hydrated is an easy win for better focus.

Prioritize sleep, not cramming

It’s tempting to pull an all-nighter, but rest is non-negotiable for academic success. Studies consistently show that sleep deficiency sabotages learning, focus, and memory recall. Getting quality sleep is also vital for regulating your mood and reducing stress, which is essential when juggling multiple deadlines.

Develop a concrete study plan

Take control by mapping out exactly how and when you plan to study. Break down tasks into manageable chunks: review notes, complete practice tests, and organize concepts.

  • Find an Accountability Partner: Study partners can boost learning and keep you accountable.
  • Strategize: Use small pockets of time (between classes, before your job) to maximize efficiency.
  • Set Goals: Create a schedule with small, achievable goals to build momentum.

Proactively manage stress

Feeling pressure is normal, but how you handle it makes all the difference. Learn to actively regulate your stress response:

  • Take a Breather: A brief walk, simple chair yoga, or box breathing can quickly regulate stress hormones.
  • Utilize campus wellness resources: Attend a mid-day mediation to help you remain balanced and centered.
  • Lean into your support network: Don’t isolate yourself! Text a friend or call a family member for a quick pep talk and encouragement. A short break from studying is a productive move.

Cultivate a positive mindset

Your thoughts become your reality. Replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations and remember that you are capable of greatness. Effort and perseverance are the keys to achieving difficult goals. Some subjects will be challenging, but you have the skills to succeed.
