June is officially over! With fall semester quickly approaching, it’s the perfect time to level up your career preparation. Whether you’ll be searching for a full-time job or internship for the upcoming summer, here’s some steps you can start taking to make moves toward your career goals.
Update your Resume
Did you work a new part time job or get an internship this summer? If so, this is the perfect time to add your new experiences while the job is fresh on your mind. Visit our website for helpful Career Center resources on resumes. Pro tip: pay special attention to the section on bullet points. The bullet points for each experience can make or break a resume!
Research employers or industries and identify career goals
Summer is a great time to dive deeper into potential careers, employers and industries that might interest you. If you’re looking for potential employers, check out Glassdoor for Students. It’s a great resource to hear from past employees of companies and even get deeper insight into possible interview questions. If you’re looking for more exploration into possible careers or industries, check out the Mizzou Career Tools page and filter by Career and Major. Candid Career and Focus 2 are great places to start, but feel free to meet with a career specialist for a career and major exploration for more personalized help.
Build skills through online learning or certificates
If you’re looking to improve your knowledge, consider online training or certificates to help add skills to your LinkedIn and resume. Big Interview offers video lessons to help you nail down interview skills at your own pace, and there’s always online courses to work on more technical skills for your career or major.
Network with alumni and meet with a career counselor
Looking for some more in-person opportunities? If you know what industry you’re interested in, look into networking opportunities with alumni. Connecting with alumni through Mizzou’s LinkedIn page is a great way to learn more about possible careers after graduation, but connecting through an on-campus club that hosts alumni is another way to meet more Mizzou alumni. If you’re finding yourself stuck on what career to pursue, consider meeting with a career counselor in the fall. Open to all Mizzou students and recent alumni, career counseling provides more personalized guidance with regular meetings to undecided students. Appointments for career counseling can be made through MU Connect.
