Summertime in Columbia

It’s been almost two months since spring semester ended, which means two months of an empty Mizzou campus. Well, it’s not completely empty. The campus has been full of summer welcome freshmen and prospective students touring Mizzou, but it’s not the same as when classes are in session.

This summer, I chose to stay in Columbia and keep working my on-campus job, so while I haven’t been removed from campus for the past two months, I’ve started to miss when classes are in session.

Sure, I don’t miss studying for exams or rushing to turn in homework. I don’t miss early classes or waiting for the shuttle around campus. Honestly, I’m dreading some of those parts of the fall semester, but I’d be lying if I said I wanted summer to last forever.

While the short lines at Goldie’s and the empty campus have been nice, I’m starting to miss the chatter of a busy campus. During the school year, there’s club meetings and new orgs to join. I’m a section editor for HerCampus, a lifestyle and culture online magazine aimed towards college students, and I’m starting to miss our weekly meetings.

The biggest difference between the school year and summer is missing my friends and classmates on campus. I’m lucky enough to know some people who stayed in Columbia, but it’s not the same as living in an apartment full of roommates and meeting up with friends on a whim. I’ve enjoyed my alone time this summer, but I’m looking forward to everyone coming back to Columbia.

I know students that went home for the summer are probably missing Mizzou more than I am, but don’t worry. It’s here and ready to welcome everyone back for Fall 2025. From the newly renovated football stadium to professors and lecture halls, the campus is waiting for all the Tigers to return and bring energy back to the school.
