What It’s Really Like to Work on Campus

Between classes, hanging out with friends, and being in student organizations, my schedule feels chaotic. Despite my busy schedule, I also want to make money, build my resume, and gain experience. At first, it felt impossible, like I’d have to choose between my social life and a job. That’s when I discovered the perfect solution: an on-campus job

Flexible Work Schedule

Ever have one of those awkward gaps in your class schedule? You know, when you’ve got a class at 10 a.m. and nothing else until 2 p.m.? Instead of doom scrolling on your phone, that break can actually be the perfect opportunity to pick up a shift at an on-campus job.

With work locations conveniently within walking distance of your classes, it’s easy to fit a shift into your day without going out of your way. Plus, on-campus employers understand students’ lives and are flexible when it comes to scheduling, making it simple to work around your classes and other obligations.

Building Your Resume and Experience

Employers across campus are always looking for students in offices and academic departments to gain hands-on experience while building their resumes. These roles can help you develop both soft and hard skills that employers value. This will prepare you for those future internships and careers in your field of interest.

On-campus jobs can also offer hands-on research opportunities and experience that bridge the gap between classroom concepts and real-world work. The experience and knowledge you gain from working on campus can open further opportunities before graduation.

Supportive staff, supervisor and friends

Working alongside supportive staff and supervisors has made a difference in my college journey. Supervisors can develop a mentor–mentee relationship with you that extends beyond the classroom. Additionally, the close friendships I’ve formed through working together during shifts and sharing common experiences have grown into strong relationships that have carried over into my personal life.

Overall, my experience as a student employee has made my time at Mizzou even more rewarding and fun. It has helped shape me into a well-rounded and successful student both in and out of the classroom, allowed me to build meaningful friendships, and provided valuable experience that strengthened my resume, all while making money!
