Jumpstart

Jumpstart at Mizzou

Jumpstart made its debut at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2003. The program includes 100+ college students serving hundreds of children living with limited resources in the community. Jumpstart members choose to use their time to make a difference in the lives of others. Serving as role models and enhancing educational opportunities, Jumpstart offers a wonderful chance to impact your community. As a career exploration experience for students pursuing any major, students build leadership, communication, team work, and time management skills transferable to any career.

Jumpstart partners with local preschools to offer tutoring for children, and in some cases, no-cost quality afterschool care. Jumpstart members are proud to be a part of AmeriCorps, a national service organization committed to making a difference in communities across our nation. In addition to their service with children, members also participate in a variety of community service events throughout the year, encouraging a sense of civic engagement. Make your time matter… join Jumpstart!

Positions Available

Jumpstart trains and supports college students to serve as part-time tutors. Jumpstart tutors work with young children to build skills crucial to school success. As a Jumpstart Tutor, you will inspire young children to learn, serve your local community, and work as part of a team of your peers. Additionally, all tutors receive professional-caliber training to help promote children’s school success while developing professional skills in a fun environment! Tutors are at the heart of Jumpstart. They have the potential to earn pay through the Work-Study Program class or internship credit that counts towards graduation, and an AmeriCorps Education Award. Tutors serve 10-12 hours per week, transportation is not required, and all majors are encouraged to apply!

Jumpstart also offers leadership roles including Team Leader (TL), Volunteer Coordinator (VC), and Project Coordinator (PC). These positions require graduate student standing, or previous service as a Jumpstart tutor. All leadership positions offer a work study wage and the potential of an assistantship with graduate standing. Both the TL and VC positions also include the AmeriCorps scholarship.
