Jumpstart at Mizzou

Jumpstart made its debut at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2003. The program includes 100+ college students serving hundreds of at-risk children in the community. Jumpstart members choose to use their time to make a difference in the lives of others. Serving as role models and enhancing educational opportunities, they positively impact the lives of children with their service.

Jumpstart partners with local preschools to offer tutoring for children, and in some cases, no-cost quality afterschool care. In addition to their service with children, members also participate in a variety of community service events throughout the year. Jumpstart members are proud to be a part of AmeriCorps, a national service organization committed to making a difference in communities across our nation. Make your time matter… join Jumpstart!

Jumpstart, a preschool enrichment and literacy program, trains and supports college students to serve as part-time tutors. Jumpstart tutors work with young children to build skills crucial to school success. As a Jumpstart Tutor, you will inspire young children to learn, serve your local community, and work on a team of your peers. Additionally, all tutors receive professional-caliber training to help them implement Jumpstart’s outcome-based program, promote children’s school success, and build family involvement.

Tutors gain hands-on professional development experience, have the potential to earn a Work-Study award, class or internship credit, and an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the service term. Application workshops are held each spring to bring students on board for the following academic year. To learn more about upcoming dates for workshops, please email dicksoncn@missouri.edu.

Jumpstart also offers leadership roles including Team Leader (TL), Volunteer Coordinator (VC), and Project Coordinator (PC). These positions require graduate student standing, or service as a Jumpstart tutor for a minimum of two years. All leadership positions offer a tuition assistantship with graduate standing, and work study hourly wage. Both the TL and VC positions also include the AmeriCorps education award.
