Hi, my name is Sydney, and I am a journalism major. Although I’ve mostly been set on my career path, I’ve used a variety of resources to help clarify my direction, and I’ve found them to be incredibly helpful. Here are a few resources I’d recommend to anyone navigating their career journey:
Meet with a Career Specialist
Career Specialists offer one-on-one consultations and refer you to career assessments and resources that help you explore major options aligned with your interests. All the counselors are trained and are fellow college students, so meeting with one is not intimidating at all. I met with a Career Specialist as a freshman when I was considering changing my major, and I found that the advice they gave helped me stay on track with my current journalism major.
Play the Career Interest Game
This game is based on Dr. John Holland’s theory that people can be classified into six different groups based on their interests and talents. The Holland Code provides a letter combination based on your test results. Although I’m pretty confident in my career path, I still took the test, and my three-letter code lined up almost perfectly with my journalism major and my future law school plans.
Check Out What Can I Do with This Major? resource
This resource is a great way to explore different career options available for each major. I highly recommend it if you’ve taken and enjoyed a few classes within a certain major and are considering pursuing a related career path.
Look at MU Career Center web site
The Investigate Careers page offers a variety of resources to help you navigate choosing the right career path. One of those resources is Focus2, an assessment that matches your interests, values, skills, and personality to potential occupations. I’ve taken this and found that it aligned perfectly with my current major and career plans. It also links to Candid Career, which provides short videos of professionals describing their jobs.
Choosing a career path can feel overwhelming, but with the right tools and support, it can become a much clearer and more manageable process. These resources have helped me solidify my direction, and I’m confident they can do the same for you.
