Don’t Let Switching Majors Spook You!

There is nothing more daunting than wanting to change your major, however, you’re not alone!  According to NACADA (National Academic Advising Association), about half of students who are working towards their bachelor’s degree switch their major at least once.

College is a time to prepare you for your future, so it is important to find a major that will lead you to a satisfying and fulfilling career! Whether you are just questioning or are ready to jump into a new major, there are a plethora of tools and resources at your disposal.

Feeling uncertain where to start?

Many students feel overwhelmed when choosing a different major. Focus 2 is a helpful online tool for exploring different majors that suit your interests and values. You can take the Work Interest and Values Assessment, to discover what kinds of jobs match your personality and preferences. Focus 2 also provides a career database where you can easily explore, research, and compare potential career paths that interest you.

Mizzou also provides Career Counseling which can also be a great first step for exploring a new career or major. The career counselor can discuss possible majors and help you solidify your academic career plan. To get started you can sign up for an appointment through MU Connect or email CareerCounseling@missouri.edu with any questions.

If you feel confident about the major you want to switch to, you may email the academic advisor in that major and set up a meeting to discuss your career plan and next steps.

Once I switch, what should I do?

Just because you switched your major, doesn’t mean you are starting over. Take a moment and assess your previous classes, experiences, and jobs and see how you can transfer some of those skills into your new major. These transferable skills can be a great starting point when applying for jobs or networking with peers.

One way to get connected to your major is through Handshake! Handshake is a website full of part-time jobs, full-time jobs, and internships. Handshake provides career opportunities and jobs for all experience levels. Handshake can also keep you up to date on job fairs and networking events happening near you. Getting connected at these events with alumni and peers within your major is a great way to get insight and open up future job opportunities.

Switching your major can be scary, but not loving your major is worse! If you are having difficulty with resumes, interviews, or jobs, visit the Career Center website or drop-in  for career consultations Monday-Friday, 9am to 4pm.
