A common misconception about researching companies is that it’s difficult or requires extensive knowledge of the field. In reality, it just takes some time and knowing where to look! Researching companies can benefit job seekers in many ways, such as:
- Standing out to employers during the interview process
- Determining if a company’s work environment aligns with your work values
- Understanding a company’s reputation and impact
- Learning from former employees about their experiences at the job
Where to Start?
At first you might feel overwhelmed, but the best place to start is by simply Googling the company. This will bring up many important elements of company research, such as their website, social media, recent news, and related companies.
Checking their Website
Their website can provide a plethora of information about the company’s mission statement, current staff, events, and history. Make sure to note things that could be mentioned during the interview, such as recent success stories or win. This shows the employers that you are not only interested, but that you are willing to take the extra steps to show your passion. Also, consider learning the hiring manager’s name for the interview. Since they are the one who decides if you are hired, it is important to stand out.
Employee Feedback
Hearing from past employees can provide you great insight on the day-to-day environment and expectations that the job has. You can reach out to past employees through LinkedIn. Glassdoor also provides anonymous reviews from past employees. If a job has many high reviews, it can also be talking during the interview. For example, you might say, “I am very interested in this position because past employees say that the work is fulfilling and provided them with experience that they still use to this day”.
Look at their Online Presence
If a company has a social media page, that can be a quick and easy way to personalize your cover letter. Some companies also have career opportunities through social media, so it is a good way to know when a new position opens.
Handshake is also a great resource to find companies and organizations that are specifically looking for college students. With Career Fair Week coming up (October 1-3), Handshake offers students a deeper look into what companies will be available and lets you impress recruiters with your prep!
While preparing for that next interview, make sure to do your research. Showing recruiters that you are willing to go the extra mile will make you a more compelling employer and allow you to stand out amongst the crowd.
