National Career Development Month

November is National Career Development Month and there are a host of activities to help you become career ready! 

November 2: Handshake Hacks  
12:00-12:45 pm
Lower level, Student Success Center

Details: Learn how to leverage the Handshake platform to search and apply for employment opportunities in Missouri and throughout the United States! We’ll also show you how to connect with alumni, message employers, follow companies and engage in recruitment events. We’ll be serving lunch (Jimmy John’s) so an RSVP is required!

November 6: From Mizzou to U.S. Ambassador: A Career of International Service 
4:00 PM – 5:15 PM 
Stotler Lounge, Memorial Union 

Details:  U.S. ambassador to Malawi and MU alumnus David J. Young will share his career path from Mizzou to the top ranks of the U.S. Foreign Service. Join us to learn about his experiences serving in Africa, U.S. policy in the region and advice for those interested in international careers.  

November 6: First Gen Career Connections Networking Event  
5:30-7:00 pm
Columbia Art League (207 S 9th St., Columbia, MO)

Details: Join us for a fun and casual career-advancing opportunity where you will expand your career readiness by networking with local, state, and national employers. Food and mocktails provided! No resume or business attire necessary. 

 

November 7: Native American Alumni Career Panel

Details: Join us to discuss the path from college to career from a few self-identified Native American MU Alumni. Open and welcome to all! Panelists include Ryder Jiron | Communications and Policy Coordinator, Dr. Jaquetta Shade-Johnson | MU English Professor and Owen Cruz | Diversity & Inclusion Program Coordinator. *Food Provided

November 8: First Gen Alumni Career Panel

Details: Enjoy food while listening to MU alumni chat about their experiences navigating life and the workplace as a self-identified First-Gen college graduate.

Details: Time management is a soft skill needed for academic and professional success. Come and assess your pre-existing thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors towards time management and learn to improve your strategies.

November 9: Mastering Core Career Competencies

Women’s Center

Details: Career readiness is a foundation of core competencies that broadly prepare college students for success in the workplace. Learn about the 8 core career competencies and more!

November 14: Coffee, Cocoa and Careers  
Time: 10:00 am-12:00 pm
Speaker’s Circle

Details: Caffeinate your career! Enjoy a free cup of Lakota coffee or cocoa! Students may also spin our prize wheel for free swag if you download the Handshake app or follow Career Center socials. Stop by Speaker’s Circle to see us!

November 14: Summer Research Experiences

Details: Summer is a great time to participate in an intensive research experience. Join us to learn more details about Research Experience for Undergraduates (REUs) and other programs, the timelines for application (earlier than you might guess!), and tips for assembling a competitive application packet. 

November 16: Putting Research on Your Resume

Details: You’ve had an amazing experience working as part of a research team at Mizzou (or off-campus)! How do you showcase this experience on your resume? Join Laura Peiter from the Career Center to learn how to structure your resume and highlight specific research skills in order to shine the spotlight on your research experience. More than just a basic resume workshop, join us to learn how you can translate the skills learned during a hands-on experience into a high-impact resume!

November 30: Experiential Learning-Learning by Doing
