Taking MAJOR Steps

Did you know that at least 80% of college students change majors at least once during their college career? So, it’s nothing to worry about if you find yourself getting more and more curious about other educational paths. In fact, its more beneficial if you do your research now and switch sooner rather than later. Here are some things to look at as you reconsider your path at MU.

First, Mizzou offers 300 different degree, minor, and certificate programs across campus. So, if your first choice wasn’t the right one, your options aren’t limited. We also offer courses specifically dedicated to walking students through the discovery and exploration processes. If those don’t interest you, you might want to reach out to the Discovery Center, which is meant to help exploring students find a career track that perfectly fits their needs and interest.

If you don’t exactly know what you’d like to do, try taking the Focus 2 Assessment. This assessment lets you know what careers and majors would best match your current interests, skills, and personality so that you at least have a direction to look in. You could also try taking the CliftonStrengths test, which will tell you what your natural talents are and how to leverage them for academics, work and activities. You’ll receive a Holland Code that you can take to O*Net, an online database that can match your strengths with optimal career paths.

Maybe you’re happy with your major but don’t know what to do or where to go with your degree. If that’s the case, then we’ve got the resource for you. The What Can I Do With This Major tool has a list of links that tells you different career paths, potential employers, and different strategies to maximize your success. Just find your major and follow the thread to a well of information.

Whether you’re interested in changing course or have questions about the journey you’re on now, the MU Career Center is here to help. Don’t hesitate to drop in weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students can connect with us in our resource area in the Success Center or online. Details at https://career.missouri.edu/connect
